The run back to Carolynâs home was anticlimactic.
Having to leave Stephanieâs side sucked, but Blue found it was tough to stay disappointed considering how eager Carolyn was, paying attention to every move that he and Lance made. After dropping her off and accepting a quick farewell hug, Blue decided to run off a little of his frustration.
He and Lance stretched their legs and ran.
They had worked together before during operations, so this was a flashback to a more organized time in his life with a whole lot of different stress than what came after. It was good to be challenged as Lance nipped at his tail then darted around the corner, skimming over a rocky surface that crumbled apart when Blue moved too slowly.
The chase was on, and he moved with intent. Pulling in strength to draw even with his friend, sneaking around the corner where he knew there was a shortcut, and coming out on top as they rounded the final hill back to home territory.
Blue appreciated the time together and the chance to stretch his legs as a wolf. That sense of incompleteness hovered, but he refused to dwell on the fact that Stephanie was content remaining as they were. It had only been a few days, he reminded his other side.
She's ready his wolf insisted. She knows itâs right.
Not much use in arguing with the beast when what Blue wanted most of all was for it to be true.
He ducked around the corner of the playhouse and slowed to a stop. Shifting quietly, he waited for Lance to join him.
"Good run," he offered.
Lance took a deep breath. "Fantastic place you've got here. I might have to stick around."
Another one of those flashes of insight struck, and Blue found himself highly amused. "Oh, I don't think that's going to be a problem. For either Jace or your mate."
Lance snapped his attention on him quickly, a touch of annoyance in his eyes. "Stop that."
Blue grinned.
He clapped Lance on the shoulder then tilted his head toward the cabin where he'd been staying. "I'm going to get some rest. I can't say what, but it feels as if there's something in the air. We should be prepared for anything," he warned.
His friend nodded then vanished like the shadow he could be at times.
Blue stood for a long time, waiting for something to happen. Something to answer the question he had in his heart.
It was the next morning when the first thing Blue hadn't expected happened. He had only taken a half dozen steps toward the main lodge when Lance offered a shout. Blue waited for his friend to join him.
âThanks. I'm still not sure how welcome I am at the house," Lance explained. âI noticed a little more activity than yesterday morning. Figured you better introduce me before I scare anybody."
"What? You think you're the big bad wolf or something?"
Lance grinned. "Or something."
Outside the kitchen doors, a lot of activity was going on. It seemed Sophie had gotten back from her holiday, and she and her little girl were chatting excitedly with Stacy and the other kitchen staff.
